A highly experienced tutor (over 3000 hours tutoring experience) with UK and International teaching experience (UK, Malaysia, Thailand, America and Pakistan).
Having taught in Alice Smith School and Bangkok Patana School, two of the top ten schools in SE Asia, my role as Maths leader allowed me to develop change in the Primary School Maths department. My in-depth knowledge of the Primary and secondary maths curriculum, and of the cumulative nature of skills development allows me to assess and augment student's skills and knowledge from any starting point. In 2020, I returned from Malaysia to the UK for family reasons. I enjoy guiding all students towards success by building from their existing knowledge, developing confidence and stamina and helping them to increase their skills and knowledge.
I tutor students in Maths (Primary and Secondary), English and 11+ in online 1:1 or small group sessions. I use the UK curriculum and am able to design bespoke tuition to suit the student's needs and their learning environment.
I aim to make learning enjoyable and highly relevant to the student's needs.
An experienced teacher, trained mindfulness leader, life coach and tutor who loves seeing students thrive.
With nearly three decades of experience working with children, my passion is enabling learners to understand deeply; with kindness and fun.
As a class teacher I have taught and supported children in Asia, USA and the UK. I have used the UK curriculum, Primary Years Programme and Project Based Learning. In 2019 I became an English Language specialist, trained further and became skilled in teaching learners of English.
With Covid, my work went online and I discovered the joy and rewards of tutoring on the web. All too often, students are missing key areas of learning which hold them back. They can be unaware, or too afraid to bring these deficiencies into their classroom. In one-to-one and small group sessions I create a bond of trust with the students, dig deep into their understanding and pinpoint areas which can improve academic performance.
After years of study and practice I became certified to teach Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. Embodied mindfulness, alongside specialist life coaching skills ensure I tutor the whole person: self esteem, goal setting and good decision making are addressed where needed.
Kindness, respect and a shared vision are crucial for learning success.
Repetition helps you to learn. Some learners need more repetition. Patient teachers know how to facilitate repetition.
Learners benefit from explaining their thinking. Verbalising often forces students to refine their thinking.
Representing ideas using concrete, visual or abstract methods develops understanding . Visual representations may include bar models, number lines and other pictures and diagrams.
Students need to practise skills in order to learn. As confidence develops, less support and modelling of methods is needed.
Students need to learn to practise independently. They may initially need regular tutor time to do their practise.
Particularly in Maths, practice builds fluent recall of facts and this forms the foundations for secure calculation.
